All a bit meh.

Boris Johnson was on the news this morning. I’m trying to refrain from just ‘Boris’ (as per official Labour policy) or pet names like BoJo because I’m realising that this is only contributing to building up his charm and persona. Boris was on the news this morning though, and 9 months of mayorship has stripped him of charm, persona, interest, or purpose.

That was the problem, during the mayoral campaign. Ken looked haggard, drawn, weary – Johnson was all excitable, nervous energy, his scripts apparently off the cuff, his campaign managers keeping him just enough in check to prevent any major faux pas. But now, he’s just boring. Silly, but boring.

Dave Hill wrote an interesting piece recently about the direction and purpose of Johnson’s mayoralty, and I have to agree – so far, it’s just bland. By this stage in 2001, Ken had already put his causes out there, getting started on Oyster cards, congestion charge, etc. What’s Boris Johnson done? Planted 10,000 trees? Good-looking publicity stunt. Redesigned Routemasters? Big woo. Scrapped a deal with Venezuela that benefitted both sides? Check.

So I hope none of you were holding out much hope for BJ to be anything else than a damp squib, because unless he pulls something startling out of the hat soon, I don’t seem him getting another term in 2012.
